Frequently Asked Questions

At Russ Docken Gallery, customers across the US regularly ask us questions about our original paintings, painting prints, and other products. This is our attempt to answer some of those questions.

1.) How long did it take you to paint that?

Each piece is different. Some take longer than others. Usually to answer this question, we just give a quick estimate that varies depending on the piece. However, estimated times often don't include time spent on things like thumbnail sketches, years accumulating references, or setting up photo sessions. We also like to develop quality enlargements to paint from before mounting and priming the canvas.  Since our artist has been painting for more than 30 years, he doesn't require a lot of preliminary drawing, unless a composition is very complicated. Once a rough drawing is transferred to the canvas, work of the actual painting can begin. Truthfully, to answer this question, all of the above should be considered. The actual time spent on a painting can vary from six hours to several months.

2.) How long do portraits take to complete?
When painting a small portrait, our artist can capture a likeness within a few hours, but he usually ends up revising it for eight to 12 hours. Other portraits can take several days to a week before we're satisfied with the results.

3.) What's an example of a more complicated piece, and how long did it take to complete?
A complicated piece like "Spirit Seekers" took almost a month to complete and required lengthy preliminary work and multiple figures to paint. As mentioned before, each piece is different, which is why we have always liked an old illustrator's reply to the "how long did it take you to paint that?" question. He says 40 years, referring to the number of years he has been painting. A very true statement, since it has taken him 40 years of painting to achieve the results the viewer sees on canvas. So, when you ask an artist that dreaded question, be prepared to pull up a chair and listen to the real answer.
